Eat, Sleep and...

Lately I spend my time either eating or sleeping/resting or, well, you know. (I'm rather like a baby with these babies inside.)  There's also the time playing games with Abi and the occassional walk - such as when I suggested she and I go out for pancake breakfast on my birthday before remembering we have no vehicle and have to walk to Perkins. I made it. Or the afternoon at the zoo when I managed to walk for a good 2 hours.  I was pretty impressed with myself.  (Sad, I know, but if I had a photo of myself to share right now I think you would better understand.)
And, of course, while resting awake I knit.  I've also been reading, but mostly I knit because knitting feels more productive.  Granted, I have had to take it slow since I only have the small amount of yarn for 3 projects (one finished) that I brought in the car.  I finished two mini alien/bug stuffies for the twins (knit with some Koigu orphans). I'm working on a baby blanket and my Sabbatical cardigan (which requires some serious tinking/frogging I don't want to think about!).  I neeeeeed my stash and my needles back! This evening when we unload the POD. (Photos when the camera arrives with Robin.)  I was hoping my Turkish spindles and fibre from ThreadsThruTime would arrive yesterday (birthday gift on my birthday - a novel idea), but alas, the mail carrier was not obliging. Perhaps today wil be my lucky day - at the very least I can retrieve my "old" stuff from the POD.

Resting is fairly easy to do since Abi is generally respectful of my need to rest, but also because I have few other responsibilities at this point - beyond growing babies.  All the flurry of activity to move across provinces has mostly come to an end, for now. (Until we buy a new house and have to move stuff a shorter ways, etc.)  Even Robin has little to do now but go to work and wait until he can drive out to join us at the end of the month.
Because, WOOT!, our house is officially sold! As of yesterday following the buyer's house inspection and mortgage confirmation we had sold the house.  Of course, the days leading up to that were not so smooth. Poor Robin had a lot of clean up and last minute work to do before showings began (big thanks to our friend Denis for helping out all weekend!), and then an offer came in almost immediately and the negotiations began and then, on Good Friday (ie, a holiday), the water heater crashed.  Yes, of course it did.  Robin's been without hot water since then, although friends have kindly been offering their showers.  And, fortunately, ours was listed as a rental heater, so it's a relatively simple task to have it replaced.  Nevertheless, we were afraid the buyers might back out.

Me, I trusted it would all work out.  And it did.  Thus, while Robin was stressing I was resting and spending time with my immediate family.  Soon I'll start visiting with extended family, but given that I've now moved here permanently, I don't feel rushed and I've needed to rest.  Plus, there was Easter holidays and chocolate-filled children to deal with most recently.
Did you know that you can place a request for the Easter bunny to come by mid-day after all the kids have arrived? Yep, it's true.  Whoddathunk the Easter bunny doesn't have to come early morning while kids are asleep?

On the baby-front, all is good.  I have my first local OB appointment on Friday and I imagine that will lead to a busier regime of medical visits as I'm nearing the end.  I've quite enjoyed this little medical-break while between OBs.  No ultrasounds, no doctors since Mar 26, no non-stress tests (yet). Plenty of fetal movement (dancing babies!) and clearly growth.  I've been eating and sleeping a lot - I did mention that.  My poor tummy vividly shows growth; I've got some "angry" looking stretch marks as you might imagine.  Photos eventually, I promise.  For your imagination, consider my (former) belly button to be the center of a drawing of a sun with heavy red zig-zag lines emanating out.  It reminds me of an "angry" sun.
And gee, only another month of growth left... "only".
(You see, when I posted long ago about being "big", I wasn't really meaning I felt huge at the time, but it was the realization that I was big and yet there was still many, many weeks left of growth and I could not imagine getting bigger. I still can't.)
Oh, and eating, I can apparently still pack it in.  Honestly, I have no idea where the food goes when I'm eating, but I can eat more than the men... Plus the snacks throughout the day. Yep, eating and sleeping and... making room for more nutrients. That's my life.

Moved

It's official. I've moved to Winnipeg. And for those of you who think that's "bad" (why would you move to Winnipeg/Winterpeg?!!), to make it "worse", I've moved home with my parents!
I never expected that when I moved out 9 years ago (to Newfoundland for grad school) and then to KW after getting married.
Such is life.  This is a temporary home.  Our family has been (expectedly) wonderfully supportive of our move back to the Peg.  Living here temporarily allows us time to sell our house, find employment, and find a new house of our own (Abi's decided, however, that we should stay in Nana's house always... I think not. I love my parents, but...).
It's is all still rather surreal to me, despite having been planed for months.  Abi's transitioned wonderfully and is delighted to be living here, although she'd be much happier if we hadn't given her fish and the planted tank to a friend in KW. She was convinced she could carry it on her lap for the move. She is even delighted to have her own room and sleep in her own bed - with my old pink Laura Ashley comforter (some of my very oldest friends will remember that one). Yes, she's going straight to sleep. in. her. own. bed. It's awesome!  She had said she would, but I'd expected her to change her mind once we got here. Granted, that leaves me very alone in my own bed... At least it's my old familiar bedroom with the beautiful Celtic knotworkI painted in the corners.  None of my furniture, etc, of course, but that paint is comfortingly familiar.

As for the trip itself, I'd FB'd and Tweeted that it was uneventful - and in the big picture this is true - but there were some minor things.  There were a few desperate road-side pee stops for Abi (not me!) that by the end of day 2 made me wonder if she had a UTI, but she's been fine in the house.  To balance that, however, there was no puke!  I've learned from past trips (rather slowly we learned, but we did learn!) to use Gravol first thing when she awoke to avoid the puke.
We started out an hour later than planned on day 1 (my fault, I slept in until 5:30, which is when we'd planned to depart) and consequently hit rush hour traffic through TO, but it was flowing pretty well.  Later the 400 at Barrie was closed due to an accident on an overpass.  We never did figure out why the entire highway below had to be shut down, but it took us a good hour to travel 1km. I had a hearty laugh at all the cars that were continuing to move (slowly, but faster than us) in the left lane. Once we were finally at the overpass, we in the right lane could see the EDR signs and knew to go straight ahead in our lane. Everyone else was turning left - awa from the highway.  Now, maybe some of those folks wanted to travel that way, but I find it difficult to believe that only 3 of us wanted to continue straight down the 400. The road was empty before us and around us. Suckers! Those folks who thought they were 'beating' us would have had to figure out another way back to the 400.
We got as far as Wawa before checking into a hotel.  Almost half way home.
Next day we hit the road at 6:30 again, but encountered snow and slippery roads soon after.  So we pulled over for breakfast and let the temperatures rise a little.  Fortunately, an ice truck must have also made it's way down the hwy in front of us, so the roads were much better by the time we were back on them and we made good time again.
We were across Winnipeg and home before 9pm.
I also want to add that all the people we met en route were very friendly and our food stops were all tasty. All in all, it was a pleasant trip.
Oh, as expected by me, Abi and Darla were great travellers.  The cats were pretty good too - we'd only hear some meows from Fenwick in the morning and then silence from the boot.  I was amazed that I was able to get them back in the crates on day 2.
Everyone (pets included) made themselves quite at home once we arrived.  Even Fenwick only hid for a day. George, of course, announced he was 'here' just as he did when he arrived in our home in KW. By that I mean he doesn't hide or shy away. He immediately explores and takes charge of a space. Abi, as I mentioned, was delighted with her new room.

So far we've mostly been relaxing.  I was feeling rather stiff after 2 days in the car. (Yes, I took every opportunity to stretch and get my feet up - not at the same time.) Taking it easy. These babies are becoming an increasing source of discomfort.

Back in KW, Robin is busy cleaning, painting trim and just generally getting the house ready to start showing it. It will hit the market Monday.  He says he has a mini batchelor pad set up in our rom - with the TV and XBox and computer and mattress.  But it's an empty house.  All our stuff, otherwise, is gone as is his family.  I don't envy him having to go from that lonely setting to jumping into a houseful at his in-laws later this month.

I just realized I could probably have tried to throw in some April Fool's day joke here, but I won't.  I imagine I could have said I went into early labour. Or had to have an ultrasound yesterday after the trip and they found a third baby. Or simply added some outlandish tale to our trip. Damn, why didn't I think of that before.  We could have been attacked by Giant Geese in Wawa.  Or narrowly avoided a moose.  Or been pulled over at the Manitoba border with both vehicles turned inside out looking for drugs... (we were pulled over along with every other vehicle for a routine license and registration and insurance and seatbelt and what-not check - but that was uneventful).
Just pretend I added one of those elements to the story and we can all laugh at how I did or didn't fool you.

Baby Shower / Farewell

Presents
Last weekend we were honoured with a baby shower / farewell party with friends.  These are a few photos - taken by friends - to illustrate how fortunate we are. As you might imagine, given that a large percentage of my local friends are knitters, there were many gorgeous handknit items.  In addition to some adorable sweaters, soakers, dress, etc, there are these two amazing blankets.  I admit I was expecting a blanket because it's become a tradition for the UpTownKnitMob (as we call ourselves) to make a unique baby blanket for each new addition, but one never knows what we will come up with.  Clearly these ladies know me well - you can tell by the themes and colour choices.  (I should add that one husband also contributes by knitting part of a piece.)

UptownKnitMob Blankets

Tree Blanket - my friends are very talented

Apple Tree Blanket
It was pointed out to me that the (natural brown) yarn used for the bottom right (from your view) corner square comes from the animals at Waterloo Park.  There is a small "zoo" there, with llamas and alpacas (and rabbits and chickens, etc).  Each year someone shears the overburdened fiber animals and has it processed.  One of my friends was able to get her hands on some of that yarn.  Lucky me!

"I was planned" ; "I was a surprise"
It's so true!  That 10 week ultrasound sure was a surprise.  Everyone around here remembers me telling them where to go before that week when they would tease me about possible twins... and then the tweet/FB update where I once again told them all "screw you all!"go and wouldn't add anything more until I'd finished making my calls. But they knew, they just knew.

There's another twin pair of onesies my friend made - that both say "Identical (but not the same)".  I love it.

Abi waits patiently with her friends outside.

Special thanks to my dear friend Heather* for hosting this event. And, of course, to all who attended to celebrate with us.
Not shown is the delicious potluck. And the coolest blue punch ever - a duck pond of tastiness. And all the other fantastic gifts, such as 2 dozen Sandy's Bamboo diapers, and a Lug diaper bag, and adorable clothes, and wooden rattles, and amber bracelets, and... it's all been boxed up.

Thanks again to all our friends who have been such a wonderful support over the past few weeks (there's more help needed in the coming "last days")
and...
damn I'm getting a little wet in the eyes.
I'm going to miss you all so much. As much as I love those blankets, they are going to make me cry, a lot.

*Granted, she's kind of responsible for this whole mess... :-p

Womb Babies

Another ultrasound today (yes, so soon because of the recent findings... oh wait, I didn't blog about that.)

Okay, let me start back at Friday.
Friday morning I received a call from the OBS office asking me to come in that afternoon to see one of the OBS doctors on that day (not my usual) about Thursday's ultrasound findings.
Needless to say, I was a wee bit nervous for the rest of the day. Thankfully we'd just seen the babies, and their lovely heartbeats, and their frequent movement... and as Robin pointed out, they weren't asking me to meet the doctor at the hospital.
The findings were that Iongantas is now significantly larger than Earb - so that they are in very different growth percentiles.  Both have grown.  Both are doing well!  But this MAY be an early indicator of possible complications later.  The doctor wants me to see a specialist at Mt. Sinai this week (in Toronto), but I'm still waiting on an appointment.  In anticipation of that appointment, I had another ultrasound today, presumably to check for things not focused on in Thursday's short 'routine' scan.  They also had me go over to obs triage at the hospital for steroid shots (in my butt, how fun) to help the babies' lung development should they need to come out early.

UPDATE: No visit to Mt. Sinai for me.  Doctors there don't think it's necessary and yesterday's U/S results don't seem to necessitate it either. Plenty of time to see a specialist once I'm in Winnipeg.

In short, we're on top of this.  I amaze myself with how calmly I'm taking it all - this is nothing like my hoped-for second pregnancy. But probably you folks aren't surprised in the least.

This type of possible development is precisely the reason that we decided to move back to Winnipeg now, when we learned, at 20 weeks, about the twins being monochorionic.  I look forward to being home soon (and simultaneously hate leaving all my fabulous friends here - but I'll post about that tomorrow perhaps. We had a wonderful baby shower/farewell party on Sunday.)

Anyhow, the upside is more lovely pictures... (must look on bright side...)
And then the babies were dancing about (as usual) this evening while I was knitting with the camera near by, so I took a video for you to see their movement. Then combined that with a series of ultrasound pictures - just for you dear readers/family/friends.  Enjoy.

If you don't feel like watching the video, you can just skip to today's ultrasound pictures below.

Babies, Again

Well that would explain why I thought Earb was being far more active/kicky than Iongantas... They're both head down (again) now.
I'll have details early next week, but in the meantime here are two new pictures.

OBS update

I was quite pleased with today's OB appointment.  I already knew the ultrasound results were "good" - in the sense that there's nothing worrisome, babies growing well, active, etc.  As I expected, I'll have another U/S next week (on the 15th). Robin will join me at this one since he's likely to miss the next few and of course, if I have to get these ultrasounds, we want to see the girls. He couldn't make the last one.
More importantly, I was pleased with the results of my blood and glucose tests.  OB was impressed with my results.  I don't recall numbers and so forth, which are meaningless to me, but her comments were glowing and indicate that I'm eating well, etc. In particular, plenty of iron in my diet.  I'll give Robin his due credit as family cook.  I also attribute it to the high quality (not over-the-counter crap) pre-natals I get from my naturopath (NFH brand if you're curious).  They're a great blend of vitamins. (It takes more than just iron to sustain good iron levels, etc.)
I'm pleased, furthermore, that there's no indication of gestational diabetes.  My regular urine tests are always negative for anything with this pregnancy. I recall a few low indicators with Abi (plus the couple times I ate too much banana/potassium before tests, which really through off the levels; fortunately I figured that out and refrained from eating a banana AND a banana muffin on my way to midwife appointments in the future).

I've one more meeting with my OB here the week of my move, and then another appointment scheduled in Winnipeg mid April.

I'm also feeling relatively good this week. Last week I was feeling very "big" and more tired. I feared it was a sign of things to come. This week, so far, I'm feeling a little more spry. I even move a little easier.  I'll be interested to see what Wednesday's belly tracing arc looks like. Last week there was barely any growth noticeable - but of course the growth isn't always forwards. Sideways growth won't show up on the arc.  There's only so far outwards they can grow.
That's the part that makes me lament about how big I am... because I can't imagine getting any bigger, and yet there are still many weeks remaining.

The babies seem to think this is quite funny... they're dancing right now.  They do that a lot.  Lately they refrain from kicking organs, so I can say that the movement remains "delightful". As you can tell, I'm actually feeling a little "glowy" today.  Most days I feel less than glowing.

Now and Then

Decided to compare a new photo with an old photo...

Here I am in 2008 with 1 month to go.

And... here I am today with almost 3 more months to go (and that's to 36.5 weeks, not 40 weeks).

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I just have to laugh at my size...
because I think it's crazy.

Oh, and not quite comparable, but here's the belly from the 2008 labouring...

kickety

Tag-teaming kicking babies are actually not so bad.  So far.  They've reached the point of "aww - that's so sweet" kicking rather than "wtf are you doing to me?" kicks. (See my previous confession).  Since one is head up and one head down, it's easy to know who is kicking me.  However, they also seem to like to do it simultaneously, so it doesn't really mater who.
They also wake at about 6:30am.  As Robin pointed out, that's better than 4am.  Except at 4am (if they do kick then) I'd probably sleep through it.  At 6:30 Robin's first alarm starts ringing, so I'm half awake.  The babies are not the ones waking me up. Not that Robin ever wakes at that hour either... he's a "snooze-button" addict. I hate snooze buttons.

Today, being Wednesday, was belly-tracing day.  The belly has definitely grown in the last week. I think it's averaged out the last two weeks - since last week's growth was barely discernible (the wee orange line).

Thursdays

Thursdays are good. I like Thursdays.
Thursdays are Knit-Night with the Uptownknitmob.
I'm really going to miss the Mob when I move.
This month Thursdays also mean a new clue for the mystery knit-a-long I am currently working on. (Not my design, just so we're clear.)
However, I think that the next time I lead a mystery KAL I'm going to have a clue-a-day - because I sure do hate waiting a week.
You see, I'm already finished with today's clue.
Last week's progress was actually pinned a little so you can see the design better. And the colour.
Abi dyed the yarn with me. The KAL pattern is called Fuchsia. Hence our colour choice.

Speaking of Abi :)

Today I also got back the results from Tuesday's ultrasound. Nothing particularly interesting to report. All is well. No surprises this time. Thankfully.  These are the kind of reports we want to get.

More Babies - Ultrasound Pictures

What a lovely Valentine's Day gift - more ultrasound pictures.  Robin's gift from the babies was that they kicked him for the first time.  Well, in hindsight it was probably just Earb who kicked him.

Yesterday I had another ultrasound. at 24 weeks.  It was a relatively quick procedure at only an hour. These will be pretty regular occurrences to make sure the babies are growing well, not showing signs of TTTS, etc.  I'll get results tomorrow when I see my midwife. They passed the movement tests with flying colours - as they bounced around.

Here is Baby A / Earb. I've rotated the picture to make the skull picture more easily visible. It took me a while to realize this was a straight on picture. After the last round of pictures, I had low expectations, but this time the pictures are much better. As you can see.

This is her spine - lying face-down obviously. She is head down in the womb and still the one who would descend first.

Here is Baby B / Iongantas.  You can see her skull face-on, and her torso.  That open spot under her chin would be her heart.  Oh, and you can see that Earb is kneeing her in the head. Such love.
But wait, you say, were they not both head-down? Yes, they were. Previously. Apparently she's flipped. She may well do it yet again, since there seems to be plenty of room yet for them to bounce around... and by "plenty" I mean "at least enough".  Even if she does not, she can easily move after her sister departs the womb.

Here she is looking serene with a profile picture.  Must have been a quick capture since both babies spent most of the ultrasound dancing about.

Yes, I'm definitely more pleased with these pictures. They are also much larger in print than the previous pictures.

Gift Ideas

VERY MUCH SHORTENED, BUT RECENT AS OF June WISH LIST:

We would appreciate:
Bottle warmer
Wash cloths
2 Bumbos (see kijiji)
Swaddling blankets
   - swaddle sacks and/or extra large receiving blankets - usually have to be of the homemade variety since commercial receiving blankets are actually just large burp cloths.

Bonnets - I particularly love these and have one for Abi (link embedded; skip to 3m size for now)
Euclan wool wash (for cleaning wool soakers)
Lambswool blanket (like these)
Wooden toys
Mei Tai carrier
Bibs
Gift certificates for shops where we could buy storage pieces, etc for future babies' room

Do NOT need:
plastic stuff (toys, etc)
rattles
more clothes (although I know you'll be tempted by particular outfits)
diapers
stroller
crib, crib bedding, etc
socks, booties, leg warmers

Yes, I am "picky" I suppose.  However, I think the fact that I "need" little and encourage the gifting of second-hand items more than makes up for this.
I'm being clear and honest for your benefit. I assume you want to know that your gift is truly appreciated and will be used many times.

Wool soakers galore

I recently started working through some of my stash crocheting wool soakers for the twins. Each took me less than a day.

Size small and extra small (had to make up the latter pattern)

Small pair of longies in yarn that the kids dyed a while back.

Go Bombers GO! (coordinating pair of small soakers)

And while I was going through the stash checking for a wee bit more blue or gold for the Bombers soakers, I found two wee balls leftover from my pink and brown shawl to whip up this small hat.

Twins Update

I got the ultrasound results today. Plenty of 'interesting' things to share.

Firstly, the twins are mono-chorionic and di-amniotic. That means they share an outer sac, but have their own amniotic sacs. The first part is new news. It also means they could yet be identical.
As you already know by now, they are both girls.
And we knew from the first ultrasound that they have a fused placenta.
We also knew the placenta is anterior (in the front).

Baby A, on my right, who also sits lowest (they are both head down) is slightly smaller in weight at 270g. Her sister is 348g. Baby A also only has one umbilical artery rather than 2. But they tested for flow through it and such and all looked good. Everything else is "normal".
Well, except for my right ovary which apparently has a couple of cysts. *sigh* Must be to go along with the cyst in my liver (also on the right).

I'll need to talk with the OB next month to know more and ask more questions from a specialist. (Today I met with my midwife.) Yes, I'm sticking with my current OB for now. In fact, even if I stay I'll stick with her because she is good at what she does and she's easy to talk to - which is why my midwife recommended her. As for the delivery, if I stay here, I'm as likely to have another OB on call when I deliver as her. I've also been informed (by the OB via my midwife) that I could consider driving out to McMaster Hospital in Hamilton for more options (available because of the level of the hospital and the fact that it is a teaching hospital with a lot more staff on site - particularly anesthesiologists). But I don't think I'll be considering an hour-long highway drive when I'm in labour, even if I catch myself early.

Anyhow, we'll be keeping an eye on the twins as they develop. One important thing to watch for is that they continue to have similar growth rates.

So, will they be identical? - We don't know. I'm rather hoping not. Robin and I are rather hoping it will be easy to tell them apart. There's not really any way to know for certain without expensive DNA testing. They could be fraternal and still look very much alike. So, time will tell.

*UPDATE* Later in the evening I had a chance to actually look into what monochorionic 'means'. It means they ARE most likely identical. And are more likely to have complications because they share so much. And with one having only a single umbilical artery... I really need to call my OB so I stop freaking out....

Abi and I popped in to Michaels today because I knew they had a sale on scrapbooking stuff and some stickers etc on clearance prices. I think we did well. I got two scrapbooks, plus extra inserts, plus about 40 loose sheets (in pairs), plus stickers for $35. Anyone who scrapbooks or who has looked at scrapbooking supplies knows that this was an incredible savings! It helped that I found a small selection of scrapbooks on for just over $3. Otherwise the two scrapbooks, even at 40% off, would have cost about the same as my final total. I picked up two coordinating floral design scrapbooks. They're not "baby" colours, but I wasn't planning to buy pastels or such or anything designed for "baby girls". I did have a lavender and a purple pair of books in the cart before I found these. They were all the same brand of book.
Now I'm ready to start prepping baby books. I already have a collection of pages I put together years ago designing an earthy-birthy baby book. The twins' books will be slightly different since I'll actually have to include more medical stuff than I'd imagined needing/wanting for my next pregnancy.
The first pages will have pictures from the pregnancy and the growth rainbows I'm tracing every week. They'll also each have a copy of the ultrasound photos. Then there will be pages from any blessingway / shower events before their birth. I'm also going to prepare some pages with blanks I want to fill in. You know, things like "first laugh" and "first crawling" and so forth. All those little firsts that we like to record. And, of course, spaces for pictures, hand and foot prints, locks of hair, remembering gifts and guests and visitors, and so forth.

Ultrasound Photos

The news is.... 2 girls!
Unfortunately, after over 2 hours of ultrasound scanning I only have these 3 poor photos to share. :(  Our first set of photos were better.

Baby A - it's a girl

Baby B - another girl

The babies (not great capture) - sisters

Baby A is on the right, and sitting lower. Baby B is on my left. So, reorient the pictures 90 degrees clockwise in your head.

Kicking confession

I have a confession to make.
I should begin by saying that I don't often feel the twins moving about, although I know they do.  I don't feel it much because they're small yet (15/17w) and their (fused) placenta is anterior (in the front) and 'pads' most of it.  Sure, I feel discomfort when they are pressing on organs, etc, but I don't feel it often along my belly.  I'm most likely to feel movement while lying on my side - so, at bed time.  They're movement is mostly internal.  Robin had his forearm across my belly the other morning and I felt a series of four kicks, but he felt nothing.
I'm sure all that will change in the nearish future.
Which leads to my confession.
In the past couple of weeks I can probably count on one hand the number of times I really felt the babies kick.  I mean, leg-must-certainly-have-protruded-out-of-my-belly kicking.  I've never been looking at my belly at the time. I'm sure nothing actually protrudes. The point is, it feels like they kick a hole through me. Yes, it hurts.
And so no, I don't think to myself "aww, how sweet, I can feel my babies kicking! I can't wait to share this with others who will put their hands all over me."
Okay, even without the last half of that statement, I'm still not feeling the kickin'-love like I did when Abi (not her name when in the womb, but we'll call her that for the sake of simplicity) would kick.  I seem to recall those being lovely experiences.  The "aww, my baby is moving" experience.
Instead, I think "OW! Stop that!" and then I think "Crap, this is only going to get worse." (Except I don't say "crap". I'm trying to be polite.)

There's my confession.
I don't love my babies kicking me and attempting to punch holes through my body and making me hurt.

UPDATE: Of course they decided to kick me quite a few times last night. And this morning one was pressing a foot against my belly.  With some probing I was even able to feel the foot (no, it was not protruding).  Abi was with me and says she could feel it too when I guided her fingers to the place. Unfortunately, each time Robin tried to feel the foot, it was removed.

Growing

I didn't think my belly had grown much...
Apparently I was wrong.  On the right is my growth in one week. The first line is from last week (13/15w) and the second line from today (14/16w).
On the left is my belly growth with Abigail.  I only measured every 2 weeks.  The first line marks 12/14w. The first shaded in area (red; not to be confused with the orange next to it) marks my growth over the next 2 weeks (to 14/16w).
(Click on picture for larger view)
Wee bit of a difference between these pregnancies.

Tomorrow is my next midwife appointment.
And I've decided that, as part of our family Yule celebration, we're going to try some birth art. Don't expect pictures - unless Abi wants to share hers.

Taking Stock of Baby Stuff

Hauled out all the old bins to take stock of baby stuff.
Carriers - check.
Baby leggings - quite a few and now have some 'boy' styles too - just in case ;)  Abi still wears hers.
Diapers - where'd they go?  I'm missing most of my covers and quite a few other diapers.  Like all my AIO pocket diapers (but I know who has those smaller ones. Just have to find where the larger ones are hiding). Regardless, I'll need more.  A friend just tipped me off to a giveaway going on by her favourite diaper supplier AMP diapers.  Good timing for a reminder as I start looking to my supplies.
Change pads - got them.  But where's my favourite purple change pad? And the stars one? Where's my stuff???
Baby monitor - still got it
receiving blankets - I've got a few. Maybe half a dozen...
Clothes - handed down what I had kept (my favs) to sis and can get those back.  But even so, that was just a small selection. And mostly very girly.  Also will need a lot more in the NB size.

Annoyed with myself that I can't find stuff... grrr.

Also annoyed with myself for not yet having started tracing the belly growth.  There's plenty enough of it to trace.

Nausea? What nausea?

It dawned on me today that I must be free and clear of the first trimester - because I don't feel nauseous!
It's a wonderful, wonderful feeling.
Also makes me have to be more diligent about eating because there isn't a constant reminder that food and I have a close relationship right now.
And not eating is a bad idea.
I still need to keep up my energy -- baby-growing energy.  Got to put on the weight - for two wee ones.
Fortunately, last time I weighed myself at my weekday workplace I was still on track gaining good weight.  I'm counting my weight gain now from my pre-Abi weight because that's my 'normal' weight.  The BFing weight was lower (by just over 10lbs) and once I quit BFing I think it was rather inevitable that I'd gain back those few pounds to what had always been my 'normal' weight (and which, incidentally, is supposedly an 'ideal' weight for my size - which is why I've never fretted about my weight and never had to 'workout' or pay particular attention to my diet, besides nutrition for nutrition's sake. I digress.).
Anyhow, last time I checked I was up to 152lbs and that was over a week ago.
And the belly keeps growing.
But I've yet to start tracing it! Bad, bad me!

As for my first trimester aversion to knitting, I know that I can knit stockinette or garter because I'm just finishing up a Yule doll for Abi, complete with dress, undies, shoes... You'll see later. It's in hiding and I don't want her to accidentally see it on the computer.

I haven't tried my hand at lace yet.  Finishing up some simpler projects first that are overdue.  For example, Robin just reminded me that I was knitting fingerless gloves for him.  I'd put them aside in the late fall once it became obvious that he wouldn't e needing them for biking for another 6 months or so. Weather got too cold for fingerless hand coverings.  But I said I'd finish them for Yule... yikes. Time to finish those doll shoes and then find the gloves... in the black hole of knitting stuff that is my former office.  That black hole is coming in handy right now to hide gifts.

Oh, and I'm starting to feel guilty about not having prepared any sort of holiday cards this year... as cards start arriving here.  Every year I tell myself we'll do it, and only occasionally do I get around to writing cards.  (Note the usage of "we" and "I".)

Speaking of preparations, I'm quite proud of Robin this year. He's out shopping for my Super-F'n-Awesome gift right now (that's what I asked for).  Yes, and it's not even Christmas eve! There's weeks left until Yule and Christmas.  Clearly I need to ask for a SFA gift every year to get his butt in gear. As for the rest of his family... sorry folks, but I've made it clear to Robin that I am not taking on responsibility of doing ALL the gift work.  At this time of year I've got enough to worry about gifts for my family, nieces and nephews, BFFs, and my local crew of friends (since I've accrued quite a few awesome folks in my life).  I've got cookies to make for potlucks and cookie exchanges. Ornaments to make for ornament exchanges... and far too much knitting to do.  Which, by the way Robin's family, if you ever want something knit you just have to ask and I'll consider it. At the very least it will make gift-planning easier even if it (a large item) takes a few years. We have time, right?  (My family knows this.)
I haven't even mailed out my gifts yet... la dee da...

Back to laundry.

Where'd my Be-Bo* go?

Last night I discovered my cute little belly button has disappeared - transformed into a large bowl valley in my tummy.
I think that's a good indicator of how these babies are expanding...

I also learned yesterday that my aversion to knitting during this first trimester is not unique. Apparently most of my knitting friends had an aversion to knitting at this point too.  It seems weird to me, still, that just the thought of an activity would make me more nauseous.   I'm pretty sure I was knitting at this point when pregnant with Abi. I remember I started a small baby blanket (and I was very new to knitting then) just to have some focus and reminder of the pregnancy because I couldn't 'feel' anything. You know, because in the early months you don't feel movement, etc. But maybe I didn't get started until second trimester...
Regardless, I've had to force myself to at least work on the knit-a-long design. But any plans I had for Yule knitting have been tossed.

*"Be-Bo" is a tiny hippo's way of saying belly button, as per the Belly Button Book by Sandra Boynton. Not that I'm a hippopotamus. But if I were, I'd at least like to think that, relatively speaking (compared with other hippos), I'm a tiny one.

Baby Bump and Christmas preparations

Here you go folks. The (almost) 11/13 week baby(ies) bump.
Feeling better lately. Not nauseous all day. More on and off.
Abi's also feeling better.
Nothing exciting to report - other than some folks around here are eagerly anticipating the Grey Cup this afternoon.  I'm not sure which is more exciting - the game or the food and beer. (No beer for me of course, but I'll happily partake of the food.)

(Photo taken at a Christmas ornament exchange party last night, which is the only excuse I can grant my friends for having their tree up already!)

Abi is eagerly anticipating Christmas this year. She drew a photo for Santa and dictated a letter for him. The first item on her list is a flashlight - so she can go camping again. Bath toys (in particular another soft kitty and a rubber duck) and dollhouse toys are also on the list. I think Santa can deliver.
Santa also sent her a video from the Portable North Pole.
She's also decided to make Santa a gift - because she thinks he deserves it for making so many gifts for others.
That's my girl.
I reminded her that Santa really likes milk and cookies and that we'll also leave carrots for the reindeer.
I'm not sure how early we'll set up the tree this year, but I did make a countdown calendar for her with poster board and paper pockets that will hold stickers and little gifts like a silly band bracelet.  We'll use the stickers to mark the days that have passed as we count (from 1 to 24).
